Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the cause of increased printing costs?
2. How can we get control of printing costs?

Users have been charged for copying for many years. Now is the time to charge for printing... the digital copiers of the new millennium.

Public and academic libraries, and computer centers in colleges, universities, and high schools are faced with diminished funding, diminished copying and increased printing demands. Self-service pay-for-printing services are replacing lost funding and enabling participating institutions to recover costs, improve services, and maintain a continuing flow of new income.

3. Do I have to charge for printing to get control of costs?

No. Just the implementation of the GS-4, which requires the users to redeem their print jobs at the PayStation (or Document Release Station if you are not charging) is enough to cause a 20% to 40% reduction in wasted printing in most institutions.

4. What is The GoPrint Solution?

Think of it as a SELF-SERVICE VENDING MACHINE FOR PRINT JOBS. The GS-4 Self-Service Touchscreen System, is a KIOSK optional, simple-to-use, controlled access -- Network Printer Management System that enables public libraries, college and university libraries, public schools, medical and law libraries, special libraries, government institutions, and computer centers, to slash escalating printer operating expenses, control printer usage, and recover printing costs.

Simply stated, the GS-4 acts as a traffic cop on the network for designated print queues.

It intercepts print jobs before they get to the printer and holds them in the queue until the user releases the job, deletes the job or the time out feature automatically deletes the job. Releasing or deleting a print job is accomplished at a GoPrint PayStation. The PayStation uses an exceptionally friendly web enabled user interface for speed and ease of use. A touchscreen monitor and kiosk can further secure and enhance the simplicity of operation.

The GS-4 includes drivers for all types of card readers and cash acceptors. Its software was designed for easy expansion to campus wide integration. It manages printing from a virtually unlimited range of applications, including internet downloads, and provides superior printer management, exceptional cost recovery options, and unequalled touchscreen ease-of-use! The exceptionally easy-to-use interface provides the easiest user experience possible.

5. What does The GoPrint Solution include?

The GS-4 is the next generation product from the pioneer in Self-Service Pay-for-Print management systems. The software consists of 5 major components: Print Queue Administration, Print Queue Monitor, Printed Document Release Process, Card Reader (or coin/bill) Interface, Accounting Database and Reports. The (optional but recommended) hardware consists of 5 components: Print Server CPU, PayStation CPU, PayStation Touchscreen Monitor, GS-Commander (our proprietary universal card reader interface) and optional but highly recommended Custom Kiosk Security Enclosure. A GS-4 system can be custom configured in many ways with a variety of different hardware components to meet your specific and unique needs.

6. Is there a minimum size library that can benefit from The GoPrint Solution?

All libraries can gain enormously from this solution. Even those organizations that elect not to charge for printing initially, will see a huge reduction in wasted print jobs that automatically time out and delete. In every instance, this system will pay for itself within the first year. For most institutions, the payback happens within 6 months.

For installations with less than 40 workstations a Special GoPrint COMBO System can be implemented at substantial reduced cost. This is a full featured implementation that runs on Microsoft Workstation and eliminates the need for a Server. The PayStation acts as Server and PayStation in the same CPU.

7. Is The GoPrint Solution restricted to libraries?

Absolutely not!

The system is highly beneficial in computer centers, high schools, public print centers, law and medical facilities, correctional institutions, and any organization that wants to charge for printing.

8. Why would a library want this system if it does not charge for printing?

To eliminate wasted printing!

Most web sites are not designed for printing. Basically, unlike a word-processed document that has page breaks, a web page is continuous and lacks pagination. Therefore, a user seeking to print something that may be small will frequently, and unknowingly, end up printing many pages. Providing the opportunity to cancel a print job once they see the number of pages and cost to print will definitely eliminate waste. Duplicate print jobs keyed by impatient patrons, and abandoned print jobs, are intercepted after a library-defined period and deleted if not retrieved by the user.

Many of our customers have experienced wasted printing reductions of 20% to 40% even before they started charging. The task of redeeming print jobs enables the user to redeem only what they need and to not print multiple copies of the same jobs or multiple page documents when they only need one or two pages.

9. How is The GoPrint (GS-3) Solution different?

NOTHING IS EASIER TO USE... NOTHING! This is our 4th generation product. Since pioneering the Self-Service printer management concept in 1992 with the LYNX-199, we have been dedicated to providing the best solution possible. The GoPrint (GS-4) Solution builds on our proven design and incorporates our years of experience and, with the best wishes of our customers and partners, we’ve loaded it with almost everything they wanted except the kitchen sink. (The kitchen sink will be included in future releases).

  • Following a tradition we started in 1994 with the LYNX-5000, the GS-4 has the absolutely easiest to use touchscreen user interface.
  • The GS-4 is the only solution that works with all debit cards, smart cards, and cash acceptors, not just a few or only one. It also supports credit cards and PayPal gateways.
  • The GS-4 is extremely flexible. It is equally efficient as a single station solution or in a campus wide deployment.
  • The GS-4 is offered as a turnkey solution. This eliminates the need for library administration to handle all the installation, hardware and network integration, testing and training. We do all of this at your site and cover everything we install for the first year with no added cost.
  • GoPrint is flexible but focused. This is our only product. It has to be the best.
