Worth Revisiting!

A few issues back, we included the following sidebar about waste reduction; given Steve's comments in the introduction, it seems appropriate to re-run it:

* * * * *

Over the years, GoPrint has enabled customers to save a lot of paper by reducing wasted printing.

Let's think about what this means -- according to Conservatree.com, one tree is worth about 16.7 reams of paper.

If everyone of our customers saved only three reams per day, that would be over 15,000 trees per year!

Issue: # 6 Summer 2008

Greetings,

Summer is here - a busy time for folks scrambling to make system changes, meet budget deadlines and prepare for next fall; it's also a time when many can take a much needed vacation to recharge those personal batteries. Here's wishing you all a productive and refreshing summer.
Steve
On another note, rising costs are on everyone's mind these days. Fuel is at unprecedented price levels; food prices are going up.  Controlling or recovering costs where possible is becoming more important than ever before, and, as you know, the ability to control and recover printing cost is the benefit GoPrint provides.

Our customers have different operational philosophies for their GoPrint system:
  • Many really want to fully recover costs and charge their users accordingly
  • Some just want their users to review sent print jobs and to exercise restraint, so they have a release system without actually charging
  • Others give their users a generous allowance of free prints, but do charge after the allowance has been consumed, as sort of a penalty function for excessive printing.
  • Most of our customers use GoPrint's ability to charge a different (lower) price for duplexing to encourage conservation of paper.
  • A few use GoPrint's ability to charge different rates at different times of day to influence and reduce peak time usage of their facilities.
Different philosophies and implementations among our customers certainly, but the bottom line is the same - it's the bottom line; GoPrint can be beneficial to your budget and save a few trees as well. Here's a statistic we're proud of; you've probably heard it from us before, but it's worth repeating:

Many of our customers who don't even charge their users for printing realize as much as forty per cent reduction in wasted prints!

Have a great summer,

Steve Haber

GoPrint Tech Notes: Treating Guests Graciously

Many colleges and universities that provide computing facilities for their students are also obligated to accommodate walk-in public guest users.

When a pay for print system is in place, how can these walk-in users be integrated into the system in a way that is user-friendly for them and minimizes the administrative burden or overhead for the institution?
